In the coming weeks, shareholders from AT&T, Sprint and Verizon will be voting on whether these wireless carriers should commit to following Net Neutrality principles.

These companies can be changed from within — but their shareholders need to know that the public backs efforts to protect Net Neutrality.

The long-term success of your companies depends on the continued existence of a vibrant, open Internet that consumers can trust. Your wireless networks should operate under Network Neutrality principles that guarantee Internet users have the freedom to choose where to get the information we want, with all websites treated equally.

Ensuring Net Neutrality for both wired and wireless networks is critical to the economy’s health and to the many small and medium-sized businesses. If AT&T provides preferential access only to those companies that are able to pay for Internet fast lanes, new innovators will no longer have access to a truly free market.

Net Neutrality is also vitally important to economically disadvantaged communities and to people of color. According to recent surveys, these communities rely on wireless devices far more than others. It’s essential that we avoid creating a new “digital divide” depending on how people get online.

Your shareholders have filed proposals on this issue for consideration at this year’s annual meetings. I urge you to take these proposals seriously and help protect the nation’s Internet economy — and our freedom of expression — by applying Net Neutrality principles to all of your Internet services.
