AT&T and Verizon Aren’t Lawmakers. Defeat SB 1161.

A disastrous bill that would give companies like AT&T and Verizon free rein over California’s telephone service is moving rapidly through the state legislature. This corporate-backed legislation will undermine consumer protections and cost California taxpayers a bundle.

This legislation would:

  • Remove protections against inadequate service and unfair billing.
  • Preserve competitive advantages for incumbent phone companies, but do away with universal service requirements that ensure access for low-income and rural customers.
  • Eliminate enforcement of consumer privacy rights and protections from telemarketers.

Phone companies should not be allowed to write their own rules of the road. Californians deserve better.

California lawmakers must stand up to these companies.Let’s stop SB 1161 in its tracks before it’s too late.

Dear Senator:

I urge you to oppose SB 1161 — a bill that would destroy a series of longstanding consumer protections in California.

This legislation would remove protections against inadequate service and unfair billing, preserve competitive advantages for incumbent phone companies, gut requirements that ensure access for low-income and rural customers and eliminate enforcement of consumer privacy rights and protections from telemarketers.

Californians deserve better. Phone companies should not be allowed to write their own rules of the road. Ensure that all residents have access to telephone service by voting "No" on SB 1161.
